Xpress Sports are now available to play across Pennsylvania. At launch, Xpress Football and Xpress Car Racing will be accessible at PA lottery retailers including bars, restaurants, stores and clubs. The latest line of games represents an increased level of engagement to PA Lottery games that offer Pennsylvania citizens a fun and exciting use of their gaming dollar.

If you’re the type who likes sports and finds scratch-off or draw games boring, Pennsylvania Xpress Sports just might be up your alley.

Make no mistake, virtual sports is not sports betting — that will be coming later, but the games can appeal to sports fan, especially when their favorite sports are out of season.

Virtual Sports, a definition

Xpress Sports is a type of game under the broader “virtual sports” label. In the context of gaming, virtual sports are simulated games in which you can place bets. Although virtual sports are most common online, they are also available at lottery retailers in PA where people can purchase tickets (a store) or congregate (bars). A major feature of the simulated games is that you can watch the result unfold on a television or monitor — and they only last a few minutes. The simulated games are often random and do not require any skill, but the games do add an element of excitement sometimes not found in other games.

Pros and cons

Some players will love these games while for others, it may not be their cup of tea. Indeed, few would probably argue that virtual sports betting beats regular sports betting but these games do provide a unique advantage — and possible alternative to sports betting — while falling short in other areas.

Below is a look at some top reasons to play and not play these games.

  • Unlike regular sports, you can play games 365 days a year, 24 hours a day (assuming, of course, your favorite lottery retailer is open)
  • Football drives and races last just a few minutes, giving you a quick result
  • You can watch the results of action in real time
  • The chance to enjoy the games in a social environment with friends is greater

  • There is no skill in these games; drawings are completely random
  • Compared to some games — such as scratch offs — results are not instant
  • Xpress Sports use generic teams, players and cars

If you are somebody that just likes betting in general on things like lottery tickets or scratch offs, these games will probably provide you with a more engaging experience. After all, you can watch the games unfold right after purchasing your tickets. You can get a lot of fun out of a single $1 play.

Frequently asked questions

Even if you are familiar with virtual sports, to play you will need to familiarize yourself with the unique brand of PA Virtual Xpress Sports before getting started.

How do these games work in general?

In short, Xpress Sports work similar to many virtual sports games. Place your bet on your prediction of the outcome, watch the action unfold live and win a cash prize if you guess correctly.

How does Xpress football work?

Every five minutes, an Xpress Football drive (or drawing) will take place starting on the 20-yard line. The goal is to accurately predict the outcome of the drive as well as what play it occurred on. Possible outcomes include a touchdown run, touchdown pass, running touchdown, turnover and field goal. Payouts are roughly based on the odds of that play occurring. More information on all the payouts below.

To play, you will need to fill out a playslip — available at PA Lottery retailers — with three sections filled out:

  • Your bet amount, which can range anywhere from $1 to $20
  • Number of consecutive drives (Number of consecutive drawings, which are held five minutes apart)
  • Your selection of the outcome of the drive.

Once your playslip has been filled out, return to a participating lottery retailer. Once submitted, your selections will be applicable to the next drive/drawing and any subsequent drives you played.

How do Xpress Car Racing Games Work?

Like Xpress Football, Xpress Car Racing simulated races are held every five minutes. Your aim in Xpress Car Racing is to predict who you believe will finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race. The closer you get to predicting the outcome, the larger your prize will be.

Complete a payslip at any participating PA lottery retailer with the three sections filled out:

  • Bet amount, which can be anywhere from $1 to $20
  • Number of consecutive races you want to play (number of consecutive drawings, held every five minutes)
  • Outcome where you will be required to select a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finisher in the race.

When filled out, return the payslip to the lottery retailer. You will be entered into the next race and any subsequent races you paid for.
