Pennsylvania Daily Fantasy Sports Officially Launch

On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced that oversight had begun at the end of April for daily fantasy sports operators that had filed applications. The announcement marks the first roll-out of a form of gambling authorized by last October’s landmark gambling expansion.

Due to the fact that some DFS have been regulated in many over the last 1-2 years, most are well-prepared to transition into a regulated environment in Pennsylvania. This means that Tuesday’s news doesn’t change DFS in a noticeable way to players in the state.

Who can offer DFS in PA?

As part of the new oversight of daily fantasy sports in Pennsylvania, the PGCB revealed six DFS operators that have submitted applications to lawfully operate in PA. The now 100% legal operators include:

  • Boom Fantasy
  • DRAFT.com
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • Fantasy Football Players Championship
  • Fastpick

What will change?

Most, if not all, of top daily fantasy sports sites have been available in Pennsylvania for many years. The new regulations essentially just formalize the authorization of play in the state and tax the games.

As part of the oversight which began on April 28th, a 15% tax will be assessed to DFS sites on revenue generated by Pennsylvania players. Taxes collected will be sent to the Pennsylvania General Fund. The tax numbers collected from daily fantasy sports will be released next year.

In addition to tax considerations, the new regulations also mandate a variety of player and security protections such as verifying player information, establishing beginner contests and setting up a system to respond to player complaints, among other requirements.

Players will not be charged additional taxes for these games and should notice very little difference in their daily fantasy sports experience. In fact, players will not be required to register for new accounts, making the whole process fairly simple.

Daily fantasy sports will be lawful for Pennsylvanians who are 18 or above at one of the six authorized operators. The only exception to this is if you are a casino — then you must be at least 21 to play DFS. Daily fantasy sports players are encouraged to familiarize themselves with eligibility guidelines from the sites they play to ensure any restrictions.
