Mark it on the calendars — March 28th is the day that Pennsylvania got mobile sports betting. On Tuesday, the SugarHouse Sportsbook became the first to go live in PA with a soft launch on Tuesday at 4 PM. Sports bettors can access the new platform from PlaySugarHouse.com.
The SugarHouse mobile sportsbook is currently available to bettors through a web-browser and on Android mobile phones and tablets. While sports bettors can wager through the Android app, an iOS app has not yet been released for the SugarHouse online sportsbook, but that will be released in the App Store once the casino has approval. There is no word yet on when mobile sports betting will be available for iOS users.
Soft launch first, then a full launch by the weekend
The soft-launch of the SugarHouse Online Sportsbook went through live testing from Tuesday at 4 PM until midnight, which will then be followed by longer test periods on Wednesday and Thursday before a full launch on Friday.
The full testing schedule:
- May 28: 4 PM – 12 AM
- May 29: 2 PM – 12 AM
- May 30: 12 PM – 12 AM
Before being released to the public, Pennsylvania gaming regulators put the platform through their own testing to test age verification, geo-location technology and accounting systems.
Sports bettors who have initial issues with the PlaySugarHouse sportsbook, are encouraged to get help from the SugarHouse sportsbook daily from 9:30 AM to 2 AM.
PA mobile sports betting six months in the making
Land-based sports betting in PA launched last November, but mobile sports betting has been held up due to technology considerations as well as concerns about Wire Act compliance. Now that mobile sports betting is here, it looks to stay.
The launch of mobile sports betting has not only been highly anticipated by sports bettors who can now essentially bet from anywhere in the state but also by the casinos themselves. The comparable sports betting market in neighboring New Jersey has been a big success, due in large part to mobile sportsbooks, which have accounted for north of 70% of total revenue for the sportsbooks.
The SugarHouse is the first mobile sportsbook but it certainly wont be the last. Next on the horizon are online sportsbooks from the Parx Casino and sister casino Rivers Casino. It is widely expected that all of the PA sportsbooks offering land-based operations in PA will be offering mobile sportsbooks by the start of the NFL season.
