Purchasing Powerball And Mega Millions Tickets Online Isn’t Possible In PA – Yet

Lottery draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions have received a lot of attention over the last couple weeks due to huge jackpots from Mega Millions and Powerball. Estimates of Wednesday’s drawings have Mega Millions Jackpot hitting $1.6 BILLION while the Powerball is estimated to be up to $620 million.

With huge headlinit’srabbing jackpots up for grabs, its hard to believe that the jackpots could easily be higher with widespread online sales.

While players line up at lottery retailers across Pennsylvania and the rest of the United States, it’s still relatively difficult to purchase tickets online, at least through a lottery retailer. A total of 44 states allow residents to play these popular draw games, but only four currently allow tickets to be purchased online — George, Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan.

Among those not included is Pennsylvania, even though the PA online lottery currently offers instant games and online gambling is on its way in the next few months.

What about buying Powerball and MegaMillions online in PA?

In October 2017, Pennsylvania passed a sweeping gambling expansion that included sports betting, mini-casinos online gambling and an online lottery. In May of 2018, the PA Online Lottery — aka iLottery went live and has since been offering online “instant” games, with most games like a digital scratch-off ticket.

The PA online lottery has yet to offer online lottery sales for traditional forms of lottery tickets (e.g. Powerball, Mega Millions) but online sales are covered under the 2017 law. As the PA online lottery continues to grow, we would expect Powerball and Mega Millions tickets to be available for purchase just as they are in other states sooner rather than later.

When we contacted a PA online support representative about the timeframe on these games being available online, we received a predictable reply.

Our website is only limited to instant draw games. You would still need to go to a lottery retailer to purchased all live draw games.

So at least for now, you will have to put on some pajamas and head on over to your nearest lottery retailer.
